Understanding the 11-Digit Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID)

Learn why the 11-digit Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID) is critical and how to share it with your census enumerator.

The successful submission of your online self enumeration census form generates a unique 11-digit code known as the **Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID)**. This code is the official proof that your household has filed its demographic data digitally. This guide explains why the SE ID is important, how to keep it safe, and how to use it during the physical house-listing phase.

What Is the Purpose of the SE ID?

The SE ID acts as a digital receipt. It links your online census submission to your physical address. Instead of having a census officer sit with you to fill out paper forms when they visit your neighborhood, you simply hand them this 11-digit code.

The enumerator will enter your SE ID into their government-issued mobile device (the Census App). This instantly retrieves your pre-filled answers, allowing the enumerator to verify your address, ask a few quick confirmation questions, and complete the house-listing process in less than 2 minutes. This minimizes the time required for home visits and prevents spelling errors in your family records.

How to Retrieve Your SE ID

When you submit your form on the portal, the SE ID is displayed in large text on the confirmation screen. The system also sends an automated confirmation SMS containing the ID to the mobile number used during registration.

Tips for Safekeeping:

  • Take a screenshot of the confirmation page on your mobile phone.
  • Write the 11-digit number on a piece of paper and pin it to a notice board or store it with your utility bills.
  • Do not delete the confirmation SMS from the census registry.

What If I Lose My SE ID?

If you lose your code, you can retrieve it by visiting the official portal at se.census.gov.in. Click on the "Retrieve SE ID" link, enter the mobile number used during the initial registration, and verify your identity with a new OTP. The system will display your active SE ID on the screen.
